The recruiter phone screen is the first real gate in most hiring processes, and it's the one candidates underestimate most. It isn't a deep technical interview — it's a quick check that you're a plausible fit, can communicate clearly, and line up on logistics. Treat it that way and you'll clear it comfortably.
Know what they're actually checking
A recruiter is confirming a short list before they spend a hiring manager's time on you:
- You meet the basic must-haves in the posting.
- You can explain your background clearly and concisely.
- Your motivation and timeline make sense.
- Your compensation expectations are in range.
Prepare three things
You don't need to script the call, but have three things ready before you pick up.
- A 60-second summary of who you are and what you're looking for.
- Two or three specific reasons this company and role interest you.
- A compensation range you've researched and feel comfortable saying out loud.
The phone screen rewards clarity, not depth. Say less, but say it well.
Handle the money question calmly
Compensation almost always comes up. It's fine to ask for the range budgeted for the role first. If you have to give a number, share a researched range with your target near the bottom — and don't apologize for it.
Close the call by restating your interest and asking about next steps. Then send a short thank-you, and you're through the gate.
